Rosetta Stone Portuguese
Rosetta Stone’s “no translation” method teaches vocabulary and grammar through pictures and context rather than English explanations. Some learners thrive with this approach; others find it agonizingly slow to reach practical conversation. The Brazilian Portuguese course is well-produced and the speech-recognition exercises are genuinely useful.
The price point is the biggest barrier. Pimsleur or Babbel cost less and teach faster for most learners. Rosetta Stone makes sense if you’ve tried other methods and they didn’t click for you, or if you specifically prefer learning without an English bridge.
Pros
- No-translation method works well for visual learners
- Strong speech-recognition exercises
- Polished interface and content
- Lifetime subscription occasionally on sale
Cons
- Slow to reach useful conversation level
- Expensive at full price
- Brazilian Portuguese only
- Method works better for some learners than others
